Has anyone ever played one of these before? what was it like?

I've never played one, but some of the earlier ones had problems with the pick-up picking up the resonnance of the strings, and they were really prone to feedback. They can be used to create some really interesting sounds.

electric violins can sound really cool. I refer you to dixie dreggs. it really depends on the musical style though. some things they suit very well and some they do not. they have come a long way. i believe they are making some violins now with the fishman aura preamp modeling system on board which is very nice. if you get the chance to play the yamaha silent violin, it's very neat. they also have a silent guitar and cello if I remember correctly. haven't had the chance to try recording one direct though. that would be interesting.

They also have some wind instruments from what I understand.
